Paul Masson – Fine Wines & Brandy Collection
An icon in Californian-American viticulture, Paul Masson, along with the industry, transformed the domain of winemaking. Born in France on 14 February 1859 and later migrating to the US, he worked with abundant dedication towards advancements in the process of making and serving wine. His family background set a strong foundation for his career in the trade of wine. During 1878, he came to the US to San Jose, California with his uncle. A few years later he returned to France only to move back again to California because of its flourishing wine business. He famously debuted California’s first sparkling wine in 1892. Never stepping back from innovation and working towards varied aspects of the trade, Masson moved his base of operations to the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1905. Unlocking an era ripe with opportunities, he constructed his famous production facility—“chateau” that stands proud today as The Mountain Winery. What is interesting here, though, is the fact that Constellation kept the brandy line, producing it up until 2021. In 2020, Sazerac Company, which is renowned globally for housing an impressive portfolio of spirits, purchased the Paul Masson brandy line for around 255 million dollars. Here the purpose was to enhance presence in the brandy market within Sazerac using Paul Masson’s legacy and customer base.
